Ground control to Major Tom

"Space Oddity",it was first released on 11 july 1969 very close to launch of Apollo 11, (American spaceflight that first landed humans on the moon).

The English singer-songwriter David Bowie was inspired by the ending of "2001: A Space Odyssey", the song tells the story of an astronaut named Major Tom, who is informed that a malfunction has ocurred in his spacecraft, is in such fear of outer space he does not hear to ground control. He remains in space "Sitting in a tin can, far above the world", preparing for his lonely death.

This song has been characterised as a psychedelic folk ballad and inspired by the Bee Gees. Used by the BBC as background music during its coverage of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Initially viewed as a novelty track, "Space Oddity" is now considered one of Bowie´s finest recording and remains one of his most popular song. It has appeared in numerous "best-of" lists, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame´s "500 songs tha shaped Rock and Roll".
